Cambridge is a Purple Flag City
Cambridge is officially a safe and vibrant place to visit between 17:00 and 05:00 – and our Purple Flag award proves it!
We’re proud to say that our evening and night-time economy met or exceeded more than 30 judging criteria to qualify for Purple Flag status, which helps members of the public to identify town & city centres offering an entertaining, diverse, safe and enjoyable night out.
What is the Project?
The Purple Flag standard, launched in 2012, celebrates excellent management of the night-time economy. It is an accreditation process similar to the Green Flag award for parks and the Blue Flag for beaches. There are more than 70 Purple Flag towns and cities in the UK and Ireland.
Who does it benefit?
Purple Flag accreditation benefits the night-time economy and all that use it, including businesses, residents and visitors. Cambridge BID and CAMBAC, co-founders of the project in Cambridge, lead a multi-agency working group of night-time economy representatives. We meet to develop and deliver projects that will enhance Cambridge after dark.
Project Status
Cambridge BID, in partnership with CAMBAC, first achieved the Purple Flag in September 2019, and it has been renewed each year (most recently October 2024). This represents robust partnership work from the Purple Flag steering group in Cambridge.
More than 70 towns and cities in the UK and Ireland have achieved Purple Flag status to date, by demonstrating that they provide a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and cultural activities while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents.
Cambridge was assessed as part of a rigorous application process that covered everything from the diversity of entertainment available, patterns of movement in the city centre at night, and the extent to which the streets felt active and animated.
Purple Flag is assessed annually and the working group meets regularly to drive forward progress within Cambridge’s night-time economy.
