When I was a young teenager me and my friends were just so jealous of John Travolta, or Danny as he was in Grease. Here was this cool looking bad boy, who was really soft at heart and had fallen in love with Sandy, played by the sadly, now past Cambridge born, Olivia Newton John. She was beautiful and was the sight and sound of summer then and still is now.
Summer holidays do go so fast, one day kids are breaking up and next day the tv is full of the ‘back to school’ adverts, I think we just need to leave kids out of the commercial rollercoaster that can so easily consume older life and let them enjoy their summer in the sun.
And summer is here and boy the mercury is rising as we go into a 4-day hot weather warning, our city does though have lots to do to keep cool. Punting is a good choice with that river breeze, stand up paddle boarding is also good fun, you can swim safely in parts of the Cam, Jesus Green Lido at 96 metres will stretch your front crawl to the max and we have plenty of places for ice cream and even more for cold beer or a cocktail.
Whilst you walk around the city you may like to follow a trail and there are currently two available, The Cambridge BID Bookbench trail continues until mid-September at 12 locations across the city centre. Just scan the QR code near each sculpture to access the map. For those who wish to explore a little further and learn about planets and space then the Our Place in Space trail starting on Midsummer Common and going out to Waterbeach runs until the end of August.
The good news for Grease fans, and aren’t we all, is that we are screening the film for free at our August 19th film night in the Market Square, so for all the Pink Ladies and T-birds out there, it’s a great opportunity to get dressed up and come and sing along to the sound of summer and certainly the sound of my youth.
